It sounds gross, but is perfectly safe and sterile according to 7 Cent Brewery co-founder Doug Bremner. Even though it’s grown in belly button lint, “yeast is yeast.”
While 9news has more details about the experimental procedures, the group behind this project extracted their own belly button contents and plated them on sterile agar. This allowed yeast colonies to grow that could then be isolated to make beer with.
Supposedly, this beer’s flavor is a bit unique. We’re not surprised.
